Well I didn't take the easy road. This took me about 4 weeks, mostly contemplating how to proceed.
The subject is the flowers I sent my wife for our 7th anniversary (December 31, 2008). She likes all-white arrangements. The objective for the painting was to see what I could learn or imitate from a couple Van Gogh paintings of flower arrangements that were done in all whites and greens.
With two exceptions, the only paints I used were pthalo blue-green shade, cadmium yellow, titanium white and carbon black. (The vase is ochre yellow and I used a hint of permanent rose for some highlighting.)
Overall, I'm thrilled with the result, although there is no particular detail I can point to that makes me especuially happy. I gues "the whole is greater than the summ of its parts." I learned a lot about detailed still life Lessons leaned included the use of using heavy outlines in certain circumstances (see the roses) and how to use thick paint to creat texture, like in the daisy.
