Persimmons

January 8, 2009 - 9" x 12", acrylic on canvas

After struggling with Acrtic Summer Sunset, I needed some instant gratification. So I thought a still life of three persimmons would be good. Wrong... I must have recovered the fruit ten times trying to get the color and shading right: Cad Red, Cad Yellow, Dioxazine Purple, Carbon Black, etc... The stems were pretty straight forward, but the calyx (leaves) were another challenge. First I tried to copy the photo, but I wasn't happy with that (see the leaves on the right hand fruit. For the left one I painted over what I had and just made it up. For the middle/front one, I just made it up and was happiest with that one.

The background and shapdows were simple enough and overall I'm pleased with the result. I can't decide if the next one should be another attempt at some instant gratification or something more complex. I think I'll take a few days off.

The inspiration for the painting is an autumn dinner party hosted by my boss and his wife at their home. The table was decorated beautifully with candles, flowers, cranberries in glass vases and persimmons; all on a sage green table cloth. My boss provided the "models" from his own trees.
