White Orchid

April 11, 2009 - 24" x 24" acrylic on canvas

This took far more days than the actual hours required. There were many disruptions in my life and I was only able to get to it sporadically.

I suppose there's a hint of inspiration from Georgia O'Keefe in here. The painting uses very few colors. The center of the flower is Cad Red and Yellow, shaded with Dioxazene Purple; the flower petals are Titanium White and Dioxazene Purple; the background is Pthalo Blue-Green Shade, Cad Yellow and Carbon Black.

I experimented a lot with the shading and got better as I went. I initially had planned on just a solid background of very dark green, but when I had it "finished" it looked too stark, so I added the blurred foliage and hint of another flower. I am pleased with the result, but I don't know if I'll do this type of thing again. Only time will tell.

Just came across your blog. Love your paintings. You paint as if you've been doing it half your life. Your orchid is indeed very O'keef'ish. I love it. I have to say though, my favorite is the persimmons. Very nice.
