I was looking through some photo albums for subjects and found a few in one from a trip with Kim to the Tetons and Yellowstone in the summer of 2001. This is sunset, looking east across Jackson lake. The sun had already dipped below the mountains. This is the first of what I expect to be three paintings from that trip. This is also the first paining I’ve done with absolutely no sketch on the canvas to guide me.
The sky is cerulean blue with titanium white and the clouds are cadmium yellow, cadmium red and titanium white, and dioxazine purple lightened with titanium white.
For the mountains I applied a thick layer of anthraquinone blue, then went back with a stiff bristle brush and titanium white to create the depth. The tree line is just pthalo blue green-shade and a little cadmium yellow. Then, similar to the mountains, I blended in a touch of titanium white with a stiff bush for dimension.
For the reflections on the water I used lighter versions of the same blends.
