Princess and Castle

November 2, 2008 – 12”x 16”, acrylic on canvas board

I’m not sure what got into me. I was looking at a photograph of Ana in her Halloween costume (Belle, from Beauty and the Beast) and got it into my mind to try painting her. This painting came together in pieces. Once I’d painted her on the right-hand side of the canvas, I found a photograph on the internet of Sleeping Beauty’s castle at Disneyland and sketched that into the upper left-hand corner. At this point, I had no idea what was next. I finally decided on a river in front of the castle, rolling hills and a path from Ana to the castle. It took about 6 hours over two days to complete. (I clearly need work on figure painting.)

Details:

Ana’s dress is cadmium yellow and titanium white, with iridescent gold trim. I used a stiff bristle brush with titanium white to create the gauze effect. Her skin tones are Titanium white with touches of cadmium yellow and cadmium red blended in. I added raw umber for the shadowing.

The castle walls are permanent rose and titanium white, tinted with dioxazine purple to indicate the cylindical shape. The roofs are anthraquinone blue, capped with iridescent gold blended with yellow ochre. The stone and cliffs are simply carbon black and titanium white.

The sky is cerulean blue and titanium white. The river is pure anthraquinone blue and the hills are pthalo blue green-shade, cadmium yellow and titanium white.
