Irish Stone Church

December 26, 2008 - 8"x10", acrylic on canvas

This is from a photograph I took while on vacation Ireland in 1993. the church is in a small beach town on the western side of the Ring of Kerry. I did it as a gift for a good friend who's been very important to me. This is one of my favorite painings to-date.

The church building is the first thing I painted, using a mix of titanium white, raw umber, yellow ochre and black for the stones. For the corner stones I added some Anthriquinone blue. For the three surfaces in the background, I painted each stone and the mortar separately. What a pain. For the near wall, I first painted a soft tan over the whole wall and then added the stones so they almost touched, creating the appearance of mortar. Also, at first, I tried to duplicate the stones from the photo; then I realized no one but me would know if they didn't match, so...

The sky started as a solid cerulean blue. I let that dry, then added the clouds. The grass went on as a dark green, then I used the fan brush in succeesive layers of lighter colors.
