Lance Armstrong

September 13, 2009 - 16" x 20" acrylic on canvas

The image is from a photo taken by a very talented photographer friend (Sandy Silva). I did the painting as a gift for my Mother-in-Law's birthday. She's a huge fan of bicycle racing. I hope she doesn't visit the site before her birthday. (A quick update: Her birthday has now passed; she had no idea and seemed to be very excited by the painting.)

This is the first time I've painted a recognizable personality and I felt very challenged. In the end, I'm thrilled with the result. Some of the most fun was the background which gave me a chance to play with color and shadows. Probably the most challenging was actually the bike, which is really a whole bunch of shades of gray to black.

This will probably represent a transition for me as I head back to University Art for a 8 hours of workshops. See ya soon...
