Rydal Mount

July 19, 2009 - 16" x 20" acrylic on canvas

The subject of this painting is the home and gardens of William Wordsworth from 1813 to his death in 1850. It's located near the town of Ambleside at the North end of Lake Windermere in Great Britain's Lake District. In fact, it's very near to the subject of a painting I did a few months back - Rhododendron Lane. I took the photo on a trip in 1993.

When compared to my last painting, this is a very different pallette. Whereas that was virtually all earth tones, this is almost all blended primary colors. I'd learned a lot on the last painting, especially about planning what comes when in a complex subject, and it came in very handy here. My own favorite part, which is probably the least impressive, is the lawn; because it was the hardest part to figure out.

This painting was sold before it was ever conceived, as a donation to a charity auction. It was puchased by friends, though they didn't know I was the painter. I put about 25 hours into the project and I think I'm starting to see my "style" developing.
