My first landscape. This picture came from a photograph taken on the same trip to Big Sur as the Begonia. (I drew a 1” grid on the picture and a 2” grid on the canvas to sketch the basic positioning of the elements.) It’s a little intimidating, taking on a well known landmark, but the composition is clean and a fog bank obscures some of what could be troubling detail. On the other hand, reproducing the fog creates its own challenges.
The foreground is a thick cypress bed. The mountains in the background are barely visible as the fog rolls in. (I took the easy route and ignored the kelp beds in the sea.) The colors are pretty limited to shades of grey, green and blue.

It took about 8 hours to complete. The sea is a bit too clean, but overall I’m happy with it.
