Daffodils

July 2008 – 8"x10", acrylic on canvas board

This is a “commission” from Ana (my three year old daughter.) She asked for a painting of daffodils. I’m not sure she knows what a daffodil is, but since she has me wrapped around her finger, I’ll do what she asks.

I found the picture on the internet in an ad for bulbs. I tried something different. I painted the background, before transferring the image. I used a bright blue, transitioning through a darker blue and finally to violet at the top of the canvas. This is the first background in a still life I’m happy with. I then trimmed out all the detail from the photo except three flowers and a few leaves and traced it onto the canvas board. This created some challenges as the transfer paper left marks on the background that took quite some time to clean up.

The flowers were very challenging: Shading the petals and the fringe around the corona were especially difficult. In all, there is 6 to 8 hours work in this effort. I enjoyed the flowers – the daffodils more than the begonia – but it’s time to try something other than still life.
