While on a motorcycle trip to Mendocino, with Kim, in summer 2001 I took a photograph of a couple seagulls while we sat on the beach below town one afternoon. Not quite a landscape and not a still life, but relatively easy as the shadowing is distinct. I used lots of neutrals (greys, tans and taupes) created from carbon black, titanium white, yellow ochre, pthalo blue-green tint and a little cadmium yellow.
The biggest challenge, which will continue to require development, was the motion of the water as the small swell retreated from the beach. However, the birds came out terrific and I’m generally pleased with the effect of the background.
