Evening on a Finnish Lake

September 2008 – 11"x14", acrylic on canvas

Another landscape and my first real stretched canvas. This is my most ambitious effort to-date: clouds, reflections from a lake, distant horizons, boats in the foreground, grass and trees.

The image is from a photo I took in summer 2006 while in Finland for a friend’s wedding. It was about 11:00 at night, after their version of a rehearsal dinner. (Earlier, we’d alternately sat in dry saunas and dipped in the lake.) The boats in the original image were light green and the house in the distance was white. I decided to use shades of red for better contrast and more interest.

I used the same grid technique to create the sketch on canvas. It took about 12 hours and looks great. I showed it to a professional artist friend of Kim’s. She was very positive about it and suggests I should show my work.
